Aussie champion Trent Wilson headlines superb field as Albany hosts National Super Sedan Title for third time

A superb field of drivers will assemble in Albany this week as Attwell Park Speedway hosts the 2024 Speedway Sedans Australia National Super Sedan Title. The 52nd running of the national title has attracted 30 entries, including competitors from Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. A total of 21 WA drivers will take to the clay in a bid to keep the title in their home State. Albany will host the title for the third time, having previously staged it in 2002 and 2017. Defending national champion Trent Wilson will headline the field, hailing from Townsville in Queensland. Wilson has made the long haul to WA in a bid to retain the crown that he won in Gympie in April last year. Also among the field are decorated drivers Darren Kane and Matt Pascoe, who have each won the national title on four occasions. Three-time winner and Victorian veteran Mick Nicola is also entered. Nicola and Kane will return to a happy hunting ground this weekend, after each won national titles in Albany previously. Kane defeated Dave Gartner and Pascoe in 2017 while in 2002 it was Nicola who beat home Peter Logue and Jamie McHugh in Albany. Both Pascoe and Kane will be chasing history in Albany, with no driver ever winning five national super sedan titles. Queensland and Tasmania champion Brad Pascoe will be a strong contender after a dominant season that included winning a couple of major feature races in Tasmania last month. Dave Gartner is the sole South Australia in the field and has finished runner-up on three occasions in national titles. Gartner is a previous WA, South Australian and Victorian champion and has won a national street stock title. WA champion Dustin Higgs will be desperate to claim an elusive national crown and has for years been red-hot at the Albany venue. His father Gary Higgs, Broome’s Phil Barton and Damon Trouchet will be other strong contenders from WA. Official practice scrutineering and a welcome function will take place on Friday before racing is held on Saturday and Sunday. The event also doubles as a round of the National Super Sedan Series. Esperance hosted the first round of the WA leg of the series on Saturday night where Zac Pascoe scored a breakthrough win. Zac Pascoe won the South East Open and round eight of the NSSS, the first feature win of his career. He beat home Brad Pascoe and Matt Pascoe while Wilson and Dustin Higgs rounded out the top five.
