Art exhibition’s moment in time

Landscape of Arrival is the immersive exhibition showing at Vancouver Art Centre, conveying Margaret Sanders’ interpretations of “being here” through different forms of artwork.

Sanders recently moved to Albany and she said her arrival had her thinking about the landscape as a backdrop for visitors, travellers, explorers and settlers on the west coast for more than 400 years.

The exhibition includes lino prints, objects and paperwork and visitors should expect to enter a reflective journey of past and present.

She said Albany’s history and beautiful landscape inspired her unique work.

“Central to the exhibition is a pewter plate, which orientates the visitor to the exhibition,” she said.

“This references the famous Dirk Hartog plate and I have put a pewter plate on one of my landscape prints.”

Her favourite piece features a mirror and she said it was a version of a portrait.

“It reflects me but it also reflects others living in this landscape. I’m trying to link the exhibition visitors to my art and to the changing realities around us.

“I hope people will enjoy exploring the connections I have made between art, history, plants and place.”

It is a conceptual exhibition, and most of the prints are available for sale. Being a previous artist in residence at the VAC, Sanders felt it was a definite choice for exhibiting.
