Apron suggests we have long way to go
A Letter to the Editor of the Albany Advertiser from Janelle Price.
I commend the ACCI for hosting the recent Women’s Leadership Forum in Albany in support of all the women in this community who make a significant and sometimes unsung contribution.
However, there was one aspect of the event which left me asking if women in 2017 remain undervalued and misunderstood.
Gift bags were handed out to attendees, and the main item in each bag was an apron.
When I was shown this apron by one of the attendees, I can honestly say I was rendered speechless. Would they like some high heels and suspenders with that, or what?
And how about a “Feed Your Man Meat” cookbook to go with that apron?
So all the good intentions are undermined by the subtle message that we still belong in the kitchen.
So get together and chat all you like, ladies … but this is your place in Albany in 2017.
Seriously? The last time I wore an apron was when I baked a cake with my gran in around 1977 (aged seven).
The ACCI does great work, but I honestly hope they have a long hard think about what they put in the bag next year.
Please note — no mascara or scrubbing brushes.
All the good intentions are undermined by the subtle message that we still belong in the kitchen.
