Anita Reca announced as the new Basketball WA’s new regional development officer in the Great Southern

Anita Reca has started as the new Basketball WA regional development officer for the Great Southern after her appointment in April. Latvia-born Reca has been playing basketball since the age of six and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. She hopes to play a vital role in helping to grow the game while providing support to associations in the Great Southern community. In recent years, Reca lived in Bunbury where she played for the South West Slammers in the State Basketball League and then began coaching the Slammers NBL1 female squad last year. She has also volunteered as a coach across the South West region in schools and community events. Reca said she was relishing the opportunity to take up a new role. “I’m new to the role down here but I’ve done this before in different countries so I’m just coming in with fresh eyes,” she said. “The main thing is to just listen to the basketball associations down here because I feel like they haven’t had anyone in the role in a while. “I want to listen to them to get an idea about what they might have been missing when there was no one in the role so just hearing what they have in mind and seeing where they are at is important. “At the moment we are looking at taking care of the athletes down here who are maybe looking at taking their game to the next level, so that means helping them with off-season work with their development whilst netball and football are going on.” “It’s been a long time coming but I’m finally here, I’m looking forward to supporting, growing and educating the future of basketball in the Great Southern.” Basketball WA participation manager Michael Cake said the future was bright for the sport. “Basketball has the highest junior participation rate of any team sport and our numbers continue to rise year on year,” he said. “One of basketball’s great advantages is its popularity across our entire State. Our reach is quite remarkable.”
