Albany’s iconic Drive-in Mart shuts up shop after more than 60 years of selling second-hand goods

The Albany Drive-in Mart marked its last day of business on Monday, bringing an end to more than 60 years of providing Albany with a range of second-hand goods. The treasure trove of all things pre-owned had become a cult favourite among locals and visitors keen to explore the packed aisles stocking everything from furniture and tools to a variety of books and vinyl records. The business was opened at 152 Albany Highway by Arthur Tutt and Graham Hicks in the 1960s, with current owner, and Arthur’s son, Graham Tutt, becoming a business partner in 1983, before he and his wife, Helen, bought the business in 1992. Speaking to the Advertiser on Monday as keen shoppers had their last hunt for treasures among the aisles, Graham Tutt said he had felt the community’s love for the store in the many people “wishing us well” since they announced their closure late last year. “They’ll miss the business — they probably won’t miss me,” Mr Tutt said. “But I’ve met so many nice people, it’s been great. I can’t complain, mate.” He said his plans for the future involve helping his son build a shed and travelling around WA in a caravan. Although the shop has officially closed its doors, Mr Tutt said he planned to open sporadically in the coming weeks to sell off the remaining stock.
