Albany Youth Advisory Council divided on lowering optional voting age to 16 in new survey

A group of politically active Albany young people has weighed in on a government survey asking whether people aged 16 should have the option to vote, with surprising results. The Albany Youth Advisory Council, comprising five students aged 15 to 17 from three different schools, were split on how they would vote in the survey for Commissioner for Children and Young People Jacqueline McGowan-Jones. The survey, released on July 18, asks anyone under the age of 25 if they believe people over 16 should have the option to vote before it becomes mandatory at the age of 18. New Albany YAC member Blake Medbury said his vote is “conditional”, with his “yes” hinging on improving students’ education on political matters at school. “Sure, it’s optional and that’s great, getting people more interested in researching a bit heavier into politics but I also think the school needs to pay some responsibility to teaching these children what they’re voting for,” he said. “Parents could also use this as an opportunity to push their opinions on children so I’d only go with it if schools were willing to inform students more on different matters and what the political views are.” Laila Cook-Barron, 16, said there were certain issues, such as the Indigenous Voice to Parliament campaign, that she wishes she could have had a say on. “I think a lot of young people wanted to see a different outcome in the referendum,” she said. “We wanted a different result but couldn’t vote ourselves. “Even in the (State) election coming up, I would personally like to vote — I think a lot of people want to have a say on how their own town is run.” Nyomi Johnson took a more cynical viewpoint, worrying about the maturity of her peers and the influence of social media. “I’m not sure that a lot of teens are quite mature enough to make such an influential decision and they don’t have enough knowledge regarding it,” she said. “Though I do think a select few would research properly and vote genuinely for what they believe in, some might just pick based on what their horoscope tells them or what they see on social media.” Lowering the voting age went to the Australian Parliament in both 2018 and 2021, with no changes made. The anonymous survey asks participants three questions about their location and age, and three to discern their opinion, with the Commissioner to format the results into a report that will be presented to the State Government. The survey closes at 5pm on September 20.
