Albany young gun Dakota Dimer selected for WA 12s girls basketball team to compete at national championships

Young Albany talent Dakota Dimer has been selected to represent WA at the 2022 School Sport Australia Interstate Basketball Championships in Victoria in August. Dimer will pull on State colours for the WA 12s girls’ basketball team, who will be in action in Bendigo from August 12-19. The SSAIBC is a combined tournament featuring 12s girls’ and boys’ teams and 18s girls’ and boys’ teams competing against the best players from around the country. Dimer has been rising through the ranks in the Albany Basketball Association in recent seasons. The 11-year-old Great Southern Grammar student said she was excited for the opportunity to continue improving her game. “I’ve been playing for four years and I’m excited to learn more and get more experience through stronger competition,” she said. Trials for the squad were held on March 28 and April 2 in Perth, and Dakota’s mum Lisa Dimer said the increased competition provided a special chance for her daughter to mix it with the best. “I’m very excited for her, and it was very shocking for her to get this far against all the girls she’s been playing against, including WABL and division one players,” she said. “It’s really exciting for her to compete against those metro kids because a lot of Albany kids don’t have the same level of coaching and they don’t get to play as frequently as the metro kids, so for her to keep making it further was really exciting.”
