Albany woman jumps out of the way of out-of-control car as it crashes into Yakamia shopping centre

An Albany woman is thanking her lucky stars after she jumped out of the way to avoid a car which crashed into an Albany shopping centre. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the North Road Shopping Centre in Yakamia just before 4.30pm after a car struck a wall. Albany woman Billie-Jay Scott made a split-second decision to jump out of the car’s path before it slammed into the wall centimetres below the ATM she was been using. The 28-year-old said she turned around when she noticed the driver, an elderly woman, appeared to be having trouble parking her car. She said at one point she raised her hands to signal the woman to stop. “She hit the front end of my girlfriend’s car, smashed into the pole and then straight into where I was and I managed to jump out of the way just in time,” Ms Scott said. “All I remember is just managing to jump out of the way because she just came flying towards me.” After the crash, Ms Scott said she leaned into the car, pulled the handbrake and put it in park. She said she felt for the elderly driver who was “really shaken” by the accident. When emergency responders arrived at the shopping centre, some of them assumed Ms Scott was a passenger in the car. “I didn’t even end up getting my money out,” she said. “I nearly got my legs taken out and I’m very lucky I didn’t end up in a wheelchair.” Ms Scott was checked over by paramedics before she went home. The elderly driver was taken to Albany Health Campus as a precaution.
