Albany talent stars as UWA net title

A group of Albany women have helped the University of Western Australia claim the Football West Women’s Metro North Division 1 Championship for the second year in a row.

In 2017, six Albany players were part of the UWA women’s soccer team that were successful in winning the same championship.

A year later, the Albany representation grew again as 10 players from the region joined forces to kick plenty of goals in the metropolitan competition.

Captained by Erin Roznoczny, the Albany flavour included Brigitte Morgan, Leah Dunwoodie and Keely Sharples, while the team added newcomers Jess Thomas, Lucy Butler, Hayley Harris, Chloe Green, Eve Maslen and Eleny Bunn for their 2018 season.

Coached by Judd Bogust and Rene LeMiere, the UWA side finished with a nearly identical scoreline to 2017 as they chalked up 15 wins, two draws and one loss.

They collected 47 points to claim the league title, finishing nine points clear of their nearest rival and with a whopping goal difference of +57.

Roznoczny said UWA’s team culture was a big part of their success.

“The biggest difference I noticed between our team and the competition was the sportsman ship,” she said. “As soon as the opposition started yelling at their teammates, their defence would start to break down and we would make the most of it and score a few goals.

We were lucky to have two very knowledgeable coaches but I also think our success has a lot to do with the environment we grew up in.

“Sport was a huge part of the culture at Albany Senior High School, where most of our players attended, and we’ve carried a lot of the principles we learnt with us.

“The girls are likely moving into the State division next season and I’m excited to see how we go and I’d like to encourage any players moving to Perth to get in touch.”

Morgan was recognised as the league’s second-leading scorer in the golden boot award, one short of the winner. Despite missing seven games, the talented striker netted 21 goals, the same amount as in 2017.

The side’s defence was also a highlight, conceding 15 goals in 18 games on their way to glory.

Bogust said it was remarkable to have such a big group of players from one city playing together so far from home.

“To have so many people from Albany is pretty impressive,” he said. “They can all play and are smart, talented ladies.

“We are very fortunate that Leah, Erin and Brigitte keep bringing in all their friends.

“At one point, our whole midfield was Albany players — that was pretty cool.”
