The Albany Rowing Club is welcoming new members this Saturday as it holds a community open day.

The club is open to keen rowers, or anyone wanting to learn to row, from the age of 16 upwards.

From 7-10am, group members will meet at the Albany Rowing Club boatshed on Nanarup Road in Kalgan on the Albany side of the Lower Kalgan bridge.

The group meets every Saturday morning, and those interested in continuing with the club will have the opportunity to take classes from March 4.

ARC committee member Tim Newbold said the club would have their equipment and boats on display and anyone interested could have a go on Saturday.

He said rowing was good exercise and provided an opportunity to see the natural beauty of the Kalgan River close up.

“It’s a non-impact sport, you are not pounding your bones,” he said.

“It is just a very beautiful, fluid, graceful sort of a sport and you don’t have to get into it for competition.

“We have a couple of members we call ‘tourists’, they go up and down the Kalgan River and they look at the birds and the wildlife, and just the beauty of the river.”
