Albany police charge man after alleged assault on elderly parishioner at St John’s Anglican Church

A man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly assaulted an elderly parishioner in a York Street church after a service on Saturday. Albany police officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Carlos Correia said the offender allegedly attended a service at St John’s Anglican Church on York Street on Saturday, and approached the 82-year-old parishioner after the service had finished. Sen Sgt. Correia said the man allegedly took issue with some aspects of the service and became violent, headbutting the parishioner in the face and causing injury to the parishioner’s nose and face that required urgent medical treatment. He said as a result of police investigation into the incident, a man was arrested and charged with unlawful assault occasioning bodily harm in circumstances of aggravation. The man was released on bail by Albany police with protective conditions and will appear in Albany Magistrates Court for a first hearing on the charge on February 12.
