Albany Orchid Society will celebrate 40 years in full bloom for spring show
Stunning orchids of all colours and varieties will be in full bloom for the Albany Orchid Society’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
The society’s annual spring show will take place from September 9-11 at the North Road Shopping Centre, with president Barbara Hawes promising something “quite special”.
“To reach 40 years, it’s an amazing achievement for the club to have stayed together for this long,” she said.
“To us members, orchid growing is not a hobby, it is a religion.”
As well as showcasing this season’s range of orchids, the show will feature old photos from the club’s most cherished moments since it was founded in 1981.
Judges from Perth and Bunbury will crown the champions.
While some orchid growers keep their methods close to their chest, Ms Hawes said the group would have special growing notes on display at the show.
The society was founded by enthusiastic growers and volunteers who were keen to promote the culture of orchids in the Albany area.
Each year, winter and spring shows are held where members compete for prizes and trophies with the opportunity to sell their plants.
Most recently, the group competed in a Perth orchid competition taking out second place against nine other societies.
The group, which meets monthly at the Albany Bridge Club, will host a 40th party on October 31 at the Motel Le Grande.
