Albany man charged after allegedly driving recklessly and becoming abusive towards speed camera operator

A 19-year-old is facing several traffic charges after he allegedly drove recklessly near a speed camera and abused the operator on South Coast Highway on Sunday. Albany police allege that about 7pm on March 24, a man driving a Toyota HiLux pulled up near a speed camera stationed on South Coast Highway near Marshall Road in Torbay. It will be alleged the driver beamed his lights at the speed camera and recklessly spun his wheels. The driver then allegedly got out of his car and verbally abused the operator before driving away. A short time later, Denmark police intercepted the same vehicle and the man was taken into custody. Albany police have charged a 19-year-old man from King River with reckless driving, obstructing a public officer, threat to cause determent to another person and driving with a blood alcohol level exceeding 0.08. The man was bailed by police and is due to appear in Albany Magistrates Court on April 18. Albany officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Carlos Correia said speed camera operators should not be abused while doing their job. “People are doing this and doing their job for community and not there to be abused by the public,” he said. “They are employed to do a job and there to catch people who are speeding on our roads.”
