A 20-year-old Albany man was caught speeding at 200km/h in a 70km/h zone near Albany’s CBD last month. Benjamin James Long appeared in Albany Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with one count of reckless driving for travelling at 155km/h or more. Under WA law, if someone is travelling 45km/h or more over the speed limit, they are guilty of reckless driving. Long was caught travelling 130km/h over the limit just after 7pm on Saturday, November 20. His red Ford Falcon was clocked at 200km/h by a speed camera on Princess Royal Drive near the Brig Amity replica. The operator of the camera contacted Albany police to alert them to the car’s excessive speed. Police managed to track it down within 10 minutes. Long was served with a vehicle surrender notice on November 23 and had his Falcon impounded for three months. In court on Thursday, Magistrate Dianne Scaddan fined him $2000 and disqualified his licence for nine months.
