Albany Little Athletics Club compete strongly at WA Country Athletics Championships in Geraldton

Albany Little Athletics Club delivered medals galore at the annual WA Country Athletics Championships in Geraldton earlier this month. The club, which featured 39 talented young athletes, brought home 97 medals - 37 gold - from the carnival held on January 12-14 in the Mid West town. The club took five golds in the premier 100m sprint event with victories to Rosemary Mitrovski, Darcy Steward, Dylan Hotker, Demi Burns and Zara Woods. ALAC’s Ginger Gleeson, Carelize Van Wyk, PG Van Wyk and Caleb Benson dominated the 1500m event under lights, each bagging gold medals. Across 199 events, the club garnered personal bests in 69 per cent with eight athletes achieving a 100 per cent PB rate. All first and second-placed athletes from under-9 onwards have automatically qualified to compete in the State championships — the highest level of competition in WA. Several athletes also qualified for the State Championships. Club president Roger Mejia said he was incredibly proud of the club’s achievements and is keen for the 2026 WA Country Athletics Championships in Albany. “We congratulate the families that made the trip to Geraldton and the sportsmanship the athletes had on competition day was second to none,” Mejia said “I personally couldn’t be more proud of the Albany Little Athletics Club for such a magnificent effort. “We now look forward to next year’s Country Championships before Albany hosts the event in 2026.” The 2025 WA Country Athletics Championships is set to be held in Bunbury.
