The Albany community will step out in support of people living with dementia next weekend for the eighth Walk to Remember.

The annual fundraiser will set off from Middleton Beach on Sunday, November 7 in honour of the local faces among the 42,900 West Australians living with dementia.

The money raised supports Alzheimer’s WA Hawthorn House, which provides a home away from home for people in the Great Southern to ensure no one faces dementia alone.

People living with dementia, their families and volunteers can take part in home activities and socialise at the Alzheimer’s WA service.

Alzheimer’s WA Hawthorn House team leader Lorraine Benson said it would be an opportunity to see friends and walk together while supporting the community.

“Hawthorn House Alzheimer’s WA in Albany is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence and innovation in providing care for people with dementia,” she said.

“Hawthorn House is situated in a semirural environment on the edge of Albany overlooking the neighbours’ paddock with kangaroos and cows.

“We have a large men’s shed and an expansive chicken coup and orchard.

“The environment is focused on ways to engage members and foster meaningful interaction and engagement.

“Hawthorn House provides day clubs six days a week, overnight respite, in-home respite, carer support, an Indigenous program, art and craft groups, and home care packages.”

Register on the day from 8am with the walk starting at 9am.
