Albany dominate the highly debated 2023 Albany Advertiser Great Southern Football League Team of the Year that was announced in August. The Sharks, who were crowned the 2023 premiers for the first time in history earlier this year, have seven players named in the squad. After plenty of deliberation between Advertiser sports reporters, the agreed upon 22-man team was selected from a larger sample size. The criteria considered in selection were consistency, form, impact and team balance, opting to form a team that takes into account players’ preferred positions. Royals winger Joel Flick, hard-nosed inside midfielder Beau Ewen and classy midfielder Dan Patching earned maiden selections in the squad. Kleemann medallist Robbie Lee leads the way for the Sharks contingent alongside defender Cameron Jones, Alan Barnett medallist Kane Pinney, leading goalkicker Brett Peake, Isaac Baum and Blaszkow while Taj Williams made the bench. Arch rivals Railways and Royals both have five players named in the team. Rebounding defender Brayden Parker, utility Joel Flick, winger Ryan Flick, talented Corey Ward and dominant ruckman Stephen Beal make up of the Lions brigade. Captain Bodhi Stubber, former Kleemann medallist Logan Stubber, inside bull Jayden Scott, leading forward Joel Want and Ewen make up the representation for the Tigers. Four Mt Barker players feature in the squad with defensive pairing Lee Pavlovich and Darcy Wallinger named alongside former Kleemann medallist Zach Jackson who was named at full-forward while midfield gun Daniel Patching features among the followers. Graham Ross is the sole North Albany member featured in the team while Denmark-Walpole don’t have a player selected. Mark Bayliss got the nod as coach of the team, helping lead the Tigers to another stellar season despite the losses of several key players.
