Albany Dragon Boat Club impressed on the water to claim four medals at the State Championships held in Perth last weekend.

A total of 15 members travelled up for the event and the club returned home with one gold medal, two silvers, and a bronze.

The local club trains three days a week on Oyster Harbour, along with two gym sessions.

Albany competed by themselves and with sister club Indian Ocean Dragons as an alliance.

Albany won gold in the women’s alliance 200m and also claimed silver with their sister club in the 500m event.

In the 1km event, Albany women’s 10 crew won silver, while the bronze medal was won in the open men’s 10s 500m with their alliance club.

Albany Dragon Boat Club’s season runs from November through to March and they travel to Perth every month during that period to compete in 2km, 1km, 500m and 200m races.

All these events were part of Sunday’s State finals.

Coach Trish Williams said it was a great achievement for the club.

“Everyone did really well and it really boosted the confidence of our club,” she said.

“It’s a big commitment going to Perth to compete, so it’s fantastic to get some recognition and win some silverware.”
