Albany Classic returns for 2022 with Mt Clarence Hill Climb and Around the Houses

The heart of Albany will roar to life this weekend with the high-octane energy of the Albany Classic.

A modern-day celebration of Australia’s first “around the houses” race held in Albany in 1936, the Albany Classic draws thousands from across the State to Albany’s CBD.

The weekend starts with the Mt Clarence Hill Climb on Saturday, a nod to the Australian Hill Climb Championship held in Albany in 1957.

On Sunday, the action comes into the centre of the city, with the headline Around the Houses event.

Vintage and classic cars will tear around York Street, Grey Street East, Collie Street, Peels Place, Aberdeen Street and Serpentine Road.

Spectators will also be able to browse markets on York Street from 9am to 4pm as part of Sunday’s festivities.

Albany man Mark Abbott has taken part in the Albany Classic since 2009.

He will be behind the wheel of his 1964 Morris Mini Cooper S on Sunday.

Mr Abbott built the car in 2011, and has raced it at Barbagallo Raceway and in Collie.

“It’s good to be a local down here and see friends and family get involved as well,” he said.

“And it’s not very often you get to race around the town and get away with it.”
