Albany Classic 2023: Volunteers ready to transform York Street for another big Around the Houses

York Street will be transformed again this WA Day long weekend for the annual Albany Classic on Sunday which is expected to draw thousands into central Albany.
Work has already taken place in recent weeks to remove a number of islands within the central business district and pedestrian bridges will be erected over York Street and Peels Place in the coming days.
It will then be over to a team of more than 60 volunteers to transform the streets into a race-worthy track during a busy final push on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.
They will start working at about 10pm and have everything in place by 6am ready for track inspections at 7am and 8am.

Road closures will impact Serpentine Road & Serpentine Road East, Aberdeen Street, Aberdeen Street, Peels Place, Frederick Street, Collie Street, York Street, Grey Street West and East, Earl Street, Vancouver Street, Hotchin Avenue and Hanney Place for 24 hours from 10pm on Saturday.
Practice will start from 8.15am and organisers are expecting a capacity field of 150 cars to take part in the Around the Houses Albany Classic throughout Sunday’s four main races.
For the first time, this year five lucky winners will get a chance to go on a hot lap of the circuit.
The winners will be drawn from a raffle on Thursday, with all proceeds set to go towards Albany Hospice.
Entry to the classic is $20 for adults, $5 for pensioners and children over 12, free for kids under 12.
Before Sunday’s main event, about 40 cars will take part in the Mt Clarence Hill Climb which has free entry.
