Albany boy, 14, in detention over Domino’s Pizza delivery car theft, escalation of offending

A 14-year-old Albany boy who pleaded guilty to stealing a Domino’s Pizza delivery car is being held in detention after an escalation of serious offending. The boy appeared in Albany Children’s Court last Friday via video-link from Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre after his bail application was refused on Tuesday last week. On Friday, the boy pleaded guilty to a string of serious charges, including stealing a Domino’s Pizza white Hyundai delivery car. In December, police told the Advertiser that about 7.50pm on November 16, a delivery driver’s car was stolen while he was knocking on the front door of a home in Parker Street, Lockyer. According to police, the residents had not placed an order. Three juveniles allegedly jumped into the delivery car, which had been left running, and drove away. The incident was reported to Albany police, who said they were notified the next day that the car had been involved in a crash on Albany Highway near Mt Cooke. The occupants sustained minor injuries. The 14-year-old was charged with stealing a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and no authority to drive over that incident. He was granted bail on December 6. He breached his curfew on Christmas Eve, then breached his curfew again six days later when he was involved in two attempted burglaries in Orana that happened about 3am to 4am on December 30. The boy, in company with another juvenile, tried to break into Great Southern Motorcycles and Chester Pass Lunch Bar. The pair were also charged with trespassing on Western Power property. The 14-year-old was found at a house in McKail on New Year’s Eve after police attended the property on an unrelated matter. Police prosecutor Sergeant Alan Dean told the court he “ran at police with an axe”. Magistrate Dianne Scaddan was shown a still image from police body camera footage of the moment the boy brandished the weapon at an officer. The boy was also charged with no authority to drive and driving an unregistered car on January 3. Sgt Dean told the court the juvenile’s “serious” offending was “escalating”. He was refused bail, with the magistrate ordering an “all options” report ahead of sentencing. He is set to appear in court for sentencing on January 21.
