ADCA Team of the Season 2019-20

SPINNER THE HARDEST DECISION After watching my first full season of local cricket, I have taken the time to analyse all the teams and players and put together an Albany and Districts Cricket Association Team of the Season for 2019-20. This was not an easy task and as with most team-of-the-year selections, always starts healthy debate. Beginning with an initial squad of 24 players, each member was placed in batsman, bowlers, wicketkeeper and all-rounder categories. All six teams were represented in the broader squad and from there the tough task began, to settle on a final team of 12 that represented the best players of the season completed. When considering final selection, number of games played, impact in those games, consistency and overall statistics were all taken into account. The final team of 12 that I have settled has a lot of firepower with the bat and you can argue there are six all-rounders in the team and 70 overs of genuine bowling, if the side was ever to step out in a 50-over match. Manypeaks, who much of the season were the trendsetters, have the most players in the team with four representatives while premiers Railways have three. Between Alex Fergie, Mitch Green and Coen Marwick there are three genuine openers who love scoring runs but I have settled on Fergie and Green to open as Marwick has the ability to punish bowlers late in the innings and then strike with the ball. The middle order has great flexibility, such an important part of modern day 50-over cricket, and when picking a keeper I’ve purely backed the best gloveman. Three frontline quicks and a spin bowler make up my team. The decision on a spinner was extremely tough but in the end I landed with Ryan Kinnear at the expense of the competition’s leading wicket taker Simon Harvey. Kinnear finished with the second most wickets this season and his ability to strike at crucial moments is a big part of the selection. Overlooking a player who has taken 36 wickets at an average of 10 may seem wrong to many but in my opinion Kinnear’s impact has been superior for his side, he has the bonus of possessing great capabilities with the bat and his performance in the finals, that were cut short, was superb. Harvey is stiff and in fact the rest of the top-five wicket takers this season also miss out in Jeremy Stewart, Marcus Mellon and Matt Heberle. But as I said at the top this is not picked on stats alone. Dan Robson can consider himself unlucky, an opener who is rock solid and has the numbers to back it up but you can’t pick them all. Finally it can’t be a Team of the Year without naming a skipper and to me after leading his side to a flag, albeit in the strangest of circumstances, it is hard to go past Railways captain Nathan Crudeli. I had three or four options but Crudeli not only has shown great leadership in his first season in charge but he sets the tone with bat and ball and deserves the accolade. Thoroughly enjoyed putting this team together. And I look forward to all the feedback, both good and bad! 2019-20 Albany and Districts Team of the Year 1. Alex Fergie (Mt Barker) – Is a pure opening batsmen that averaged more than 50 at the top of the order to be the competition’s leading run scorer. Fergie smashed a brilliant double century to go with four more scores in excess of 60 in a superb season. 2. Mitch Green (Royals) – Has lots of class at the top of the order and anchored his team’s innings throughout the season finishing third in the batting aggregate. The Royals captain made two centuries in his first three games and also averaged above 50 and played a big part in his team playing finals. 3. Jack Dawson (Manypeaks) - The aggressive right hander made number three his own and consistently scored big runs to be in the top five for batting aggregate, including four half centuries. Can easily take the game away from opposition teams and has the ability to score regular boundaries and clear the rope. 4. Jeremy Wood (Mt Barker) – The WA Country XI captain led from the front for the Bulls this season, a very reliable middle order batsman that can spend long periods at the crease while also a very effective strike bowler. He made five half centuries with the bat and snared 17 wickets as a top class all-rounder. 5. Nathan Dovey (Collingwood Park) – A natural hard hitting middle order batsmen that rarely misses out with the bat and can up the run rate when needed with his brutal ball striking. He scored single figures twice this season and made three scores above 70 and is the logical number five. 6. Nathan Crudeli (Railways) – One of the first picked for his ability to score quickly at the back end of an innings and his standing as one of the premier fast bowlers in the competition. Had the best average this season and as an opening bowler has an outstanding strike rate and economy, not to mention his elite fielding. 7. Coen Marwick (Railways) – Another talented all-rounder makes the team, possessing power hitting and stump to stump bowling at the start and end of an innings. Was second in runs scored averaging more than 45, that included one century, as a natural opener but has the ability to bat anywhere in the order while his death bowling and yorkers are second to none. 8. Aidan Dallimore (Railways) – Is the premier wicketkeeper in the competiton. Won a close selection over Manypeaks’ Seb Stanton. Dallimore took 15 catches and 12 stumpings in a premiership year and his batting was much improved scoring 267 runs in the tough number three spot. 9. Ryan Kinnear (Manypeaks) – This veteran gets the nod as the sole spinner in the team after a superb season with the ball. He finished with the second most wickets in the competition at an average of just over 11 and an terrific economy rate of 3.59 and stuck at crucial times. His ability to steady an innings, making 224 with the bat is also important. 10. Warwick Durack (Manypeaks) – Anextremely accurate left-arm pace bowler who regularly challenged batsmen this season, and has the great ability to take wickets but also restrict scoring. Part of a formidable Manypeaks bowling attack and is more than capable with the bat. 11. Paul Donaldson (Manypeaks) – The returning fast bowler produced a number of superb spells for Manypeaks, hitting a consistent line and length at good pace despite not featuring high up in the wicket takers. A very tidy economy rate and his five wicket haul against Collingwood Park was top shelf, in a season that netted 11 wickets from nine games. 12. Ben Grey (Collingwood Park) – A genuine fast bowler that loves hitting the bat hard and is picked on his pure ability to take multiple wickets in a spell. Has been very effective as a first change bowler and at his pace and accuracy is a nightmare to face at the end of an innings.
