Action-packed roller derby draws big crowds
More than 200 roller derby fans packed into The Track across the weekend as Albany hosted their first WA State Roller Derby tournament.
The Boom State Clash drew players and officials from Perth, Geraldton, Margaret River, Armadale, Kwinana, Bunbury, Esperance and Kalgoorlie-Boulder for the six-game tournament.
The crowd reached capacity on Saturday night as the Albany Great Southern Breakers took on rivals Margaret River in the headliner clash.
Margaret River Roller Derby came out in the first few jams hard and placed themselves ahead of Albany.
After trailing by 73 points before the half-time break, Albany conjured some new strategy which saw them recover to reach within 20 points at one stage to eventually go down by 33.
Rookie jammer Livid Gecko provided the highlights from this encounter, hitting down a blocker on turn two who fell at her feet.
Not to let that stop her, Livid Gecko leapt over her body and landed the jump and continued on to score four points for Albany.
The Albany Roller Derby League team unfortunately went down to a strong WA Roller Derby 349 to 73.
The MVPs for the tournament were Yokosuka (Perth Roller Derby), Ranga Banga (Margaret River Roller Derby), KrakEM (Geraldton Roller Derby), Kitty Whiplash (Albany Roller Derby League), MIlligrub (Dread Pirate Rollers) and Nacho Friend (WA Roller Derby).
