Abbey claims third WA Gravity Enduro round victory
At the age of 11, Albany mountain bike competitor Abbey O’Donnell is whipping up a storm after claiming her third straight WA Gravity Enduro round victory.
The good results keep coming for young Abbey in a male-dominated sport, as she has three wins from the opening three rounds in the female under-13 whippets division.
After previous victories in Pemberton and Margaret River earlier this year, Abbey proved too strong in round 3 at Linga Longa back on April 28 as she looks to continue her good form heading towards the State championships at the Goat Farm track in Perth in August.
Current World Enduro champion Sam Hill, who was competing at the same event, passed on his best wishes to an ecstatic Abbey.
There was a host of local riders competing in round 3, with Hamish Wilkes and Hayden Kinnear both finishing on the podium.
Wilkes finished second in the under-15 boys’ division that had more than 30 entries and fellow Albany rider Harper O’Donnell was fifth.
In another big field of under-19 riders, Kinnear crossed the line in second place.
Nick Walls finished fourth in the male sport division and another strong local result came from Andrew McKinnon, who was seventh in the male expert class at the Linga Longa event.
Other Albany riders to compete were Jamie Kiddle, Neil Pilkington, Jason Bell, Ryan Taylor, Paul O’Donnell and Lee Griffith.
The next round of the WA Gravity Enduro series is in York on June 9 and riders are also preparing for the State Downhill Series event in Albany on the June long weekend.
