The all-new Toyota Kluger has arrived in Australia, with the uber-popular family hauler starting at $47,650 plus on roads.

It means entry into the line-up has risen $2800 on the outgoing model.

The fourth-generation Kluger has a choice of two powertrains: a 3.5-litre petrol V6 and, for the first time, a hybrid.

The V6 can be had in front or all-wheel-drive, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and offering 218kW and 350Nm.

It’s less thirsty than the old six-cylinder Kluger, drinking a relatively frugal 8.7-8.9L/100km depending on how many wheels are driven.

But the bigger news is the hybrid, which pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with three electric motors.

Available only in AWD, the hybrid uses a CVT and can send 100 per cent of its combined 184kW to the front wheels or up to 80 per cent to the rear.

Toyota does not provide a combined torque figure.

It costs $2500 more than equivalent AWD petrol models, but sips just 5.6L/100km of fuel.

It’s an impressive figure given the Kluger’s size.

Its wheelbase is up 60mm to improve interior space, which sees the longer and wider boot offer 241 litres with all seven seats in use — up 46 litres — which grows to 552 and 1150 litres once each row is folded.

Each powertrain is offered in three variants: GX, GXL and Grande.

Standard features include LED lights, 4.2-inch multi-info display, 8-inch colour touchscreen, multi-zone climate control, digital radio and more.

Safety kit on all variants is comprehensive and includes intersection assist, adaptive cruise control with curve speed reduction, road sign assist, auto high beam, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and other features.

There’s a significant $9200 jump to the mid-spec GXL, which adds an electric tailgate, 7-inch driver display, sat nav, tri-zone climate control, electric and heated front seats with electric lumbar support fro the driver, synthetic leather seats and door trim and guidelines on the reverse camera.

Continuing the wide price spread between trim levels, the Grande adds a further $12,050.

Mechanically, AWD versions get torque vectoring, which allows torque to be split to the left or right rear wheels as needed.

The exterior gets 20-inch wheels, projector LED headlights, hands-free tailgate, sunroof, leather-accented seats, ventilated front seats, 11-speaker JBL audio system, head-up display and more.
