The modernisation of a Peppermint Grove home by renowned Perth architect Geoffrey Summerhayes has been recognised at the Australian Interior Design Awards.

Cottesloe interior design studio Lahaus won a Best of State Award for Residential Design for its sophisticated renovation of the 1988 family home.

“Our clients, a family of four with two grown-up children, loved the layout and feel of their home but wanted to modernise the spaces while respecting the original architecture,” Lahaus creative director Lara Staunton says.

“We aspired to achieve a sophisticated aesthetic with casual undertones.

“The original house had been repainted a deep ochre and had taken on a Tuscan feel. Our proposed palette sought to enhance the original architectural elements and reform the overall experience.”

Existing aluminium windows and doors were replaced with custom steel windows and doors, subdued tones were used as a base with walls whitewashed with natural lime paint and floors finished in a concrete veneer. Solid oak floorboards sourced from an Australian timber mill were used in the dining and living areas complemented by classic furnishing and ornaments.
