While a stay at a luxury hotel has its obvious perks — room service, plush robes and access to lavish facilities — a personal touch and sense of warmth is often missing from the shiny experience. If the cooler weather has you craving a holiday snuggled up near a fire, or surrounded by soft linen sheets in a giant bed, then these three unique properties could be just what you’re looking for. Full of personality, clever design elements and stylish furnishings — not to mention a vintage outdoor bath — the owners of these properties have created thoughtful and cosy spaces that you won’t want to leave. Petite Eco Cabin If you’ve ever dreamt of quitting the big smoke to live a simple life surrounded by little else than trees and tranquillity, then a stay in this cute cabin will be yet another nudge in that direction. Sitting on Windows Estate, a certified organic vineyard and winery owned by Joanne and Chris Davies, the solo cabin makes the most of its leafy surrounds with an eco-friendly design, natural materials and Australian-made furniture and homewares. “It was really about wanting to allow people to experience what we do every day, in a way that they could do it at their own pace. I’m personally in love with all of the mountain cabins over in the snow,” Mrs Davies says. Designed by building designer, and neighbour at the time, Matilda Brealey, the cabin mixes sustainable elements — including rainwater storage, solar hot water, timber milled from a family farm, and no air-conditioning thanks to its clever orientation — with bespoke features and handcrafted furnishings. “It really needed to fit in with the landscape. We didn’t want to remove any vegetation at all, we wanted it to be nestled and kind of hidden away,” Mrs Davies says. “I did know I essentially wanted to do a tiny house because we’re very simple people ... and it’s kind of nice to remind people that you don’t need a lot.” A stand-out feature is the waterfall window over the bed, which she says was a must-have when she was briefing its design, as well as the vintage outdoor bath in view of the lake. The property’s cellar door is also a stone’s throw away, perfect proximity to take a bottle of red home to enjoy by the fireplace. Majuba Country Lodge After a life spent working in hospitality across South Africa, France and the US, Andrea Saville and her partner Johann, a Michelin-trained chef, decided to settle in Albany. The Great Southern town is lucky to have their talents, with the couple opening the picturesque Majuba Country Lodge, as well as the European-influenced Majuba Bistro. Located 20 minutes out of Albany in Kalgan, the intimate lodge has two suites — named Serengeti and Savuti after the couple’s South African roots — which have been further influenced by the country of their origin inside, with African-inspired homewares and furniture. “We love Albany, and find it reminiscent of parts of southern Africa, only you’ll spot kangaroos rather than wildebeest,” Ms Saville says. Inside, guests will find a space filled with light, Australian brand Papaya homewares, who specialise in high-quality linens, ceramics and homewares and personal touches such as scented candles, tea and bathroom products. Outside is a fire pit, dam and sweeping views of Oyster Bay. La Latteria In a time when we’re unable to travel to our favourite far-flung destinations, holiday-goers are lucky that clever people like interior designer Bec Beeson-Harra have created their own slice of Europe in our State. If this rustic villa packed with personality and style nestled in Bridgetown reminds you of the European countryside, then Beeson-Harra and husband Ermal, who she met and married in Siena, Tuscany, have successfully met their own brief. “When we bought the house 20 years ago, it was just a boring box — but seemed to perfectly translate to Italianate style with the addition of shutters, render and decor,” she says. “The whole Blackwood region has a bit of a Tuscan feel, so the house fits its surrounds perfectly as do the views of hills and valleys — you feel like you could be anywhere.” The four-bedroom home mixes old with new, styled with furniture and accessories Beeson-Harra has collected over the years, as well as new sofas and beds from Domayne for extra comfort. “Guests love the house and always comment on it being cosy, clean, quirky and comfortable,” she says. “They all love the kitchen, which was an old veranda that we converted and is now surrounded by glass that looks over trees towards the valley.”
