American actor Richard Riehle has died at the age of 78.

The character actor has more than 400 film and television credits under his belt across his almost 50 year career.

Well recognised for his iconic moustache, Riehle is best known for his role in 1999 film Office Space, in which he played anxious product manager Tom Smykowski.

Other film roles included a mechanic in Bridesmaids, a guard in The Fugitive, a banker in Casino, and Rob Schneider’s dad in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.

On the small screen, he played a grandfather on Grounded For Life, the principal in sitcom Ferris Bueller, and a police officer on The West Wing.

Most recently he appeared in HBO comedy Barry as a prison warden.

His talent agency and management company told NBC News Riehle would be remembered for his kindness and supporting others in the industry.

“Beyond his immense talent, he will be remembered for his genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity, particularly toward emerging actors and filmmakers, whom he encouraged and supported at every opportunity,” they said.

Grounded for Life Co-star Donal Logue remembered his on-screen dad as “an amazing human” in an online tribute.

“He played my dad for five years on ‘Grounded for Life’ and I loved every minute I got to spend with him,” he wrote.

“We all loved Richard. I had to apologize to him after his final network audition for Grounded because he made me laugh so hard, I broke character and fell to the floor.”

Logue remembered Riehle as someone who carried a novel in his back pocket, and made mention of his recent health challenges.

He died of natural causes in Lose Angeles on Thursday, TMZ reported.
