Discovery of mould-infested bathroom at Peel Health Campus is raising concerns around sanitation practices

Shocking photographs of a mould-infested bathroom in a palliative care ward at Peel Health Campus have raised fresh questions about sanitation practices and maintenance at the crisis-hit hospital. Lynette Rogerson was battling terminal breast cancer when she was placed in a room connected to a shower covered with extensive mould in February 2021. Her husband John Rogerson — who watched his wife succumb to her cancer nine weeks after her stint at Peel Health Campus — claimed he alerted nurses to the “disgusting” mould at the time. “I was told they knew about it and had reported it but that the hospital hadn’t done anything to address it,” Mr Rogerson said. Peel Health Campus — operated by Ramsay Health Care — was forced into a partial shutdown last Friday after the discovery of what was feared to be black mould in air-conditioning ducts. Nearly a week later, in a statement released late on Thursday, Ramsay said “preliminary results” of testing at the hospital found “no signs of toxic black mould” and that the fungal growth was instead “the same varieties of mould found outside in the general environment”. Earlier this week, the WA branch of the Australian Nursing Federation wrote to Ramsay claiming more than a dozen nurses working at Peel Health Campus had “reported ongoing respiratory symptoms, including runny noses, itchy eyes, sore throat (and) congestion”. The union demanded the private company, which runs the public hospital on behalf of the WA Government, pay for tests to determine if the nurses’ conditions were mould-related. Mr Rogerson said he was prompted to come forward with his wife’s experience after learning parts of Peel Health Campus had been forced to cease operations as a result of last week’s mould discovery. A total of 32 patients were also transferred out of Peel Health Campus and to different hospitals as a safety precaution. “My wife was in there for a few days (two years ago) and it was just revolting, I could not believe they would put a terminally ill person into that situation,” Mr Rogerson said. “That was not something that had grown overnight, it was old mould and it was absolutely disgusting.” A Ramsay spokeswoman said Peel Health Campus was subject to a “rigorous daily cleaning regime” for bathrooms, clinical areas and wards. “Bathroom renovations on the ward concerned were due to take place at the start of 2021 but the COVID-19 pandemic saw works postponed,” she said. “The renovations are due to get underway shortly. The bathrooms on the ward concerned undergo a weekly application to prevent mould, in addition to daily cleaning.” Mr Rogerson said he was upset but not surprised when he heard Peel Health Campus had been forced to shutter parts of the hospital. “You shouldn’t have to evacuate part of a hospital because of mould, I think it is totally inexcusable what has happened,” he said. “Whether it is Ramsay or the State Government, someone has to me made accountable for this — they should have known mould was an issue because I told them about it.” The mould that forced the shutdown was discovered as part of an audit commissioned by the South Metropolitan Health Service ahead of the transfer of Peel Health Campus from Ramsay Health back into public hands next August. Registered nurse Bev Ramsay claimed in a community forum last Saturday that parts of the hospital’s roof had leaked for the past two years. A hospital spokesperson said “some repairs (were) carried out on the roof (earlier this month)” but denied claims it was meant to have been replaced a couple of years ago. She added Ramsay Health Care was confident its “remediation strategy (for the recent mould discovery) is appropriate” but could not say when Peel Health Campus would recommence operations in full. “Over the coming days, we expect to commence reopening areas of the hospital following review and approval by clinical experts. We will keep the community updated as these areas are reopened,” the spokeswoman said. The McGowan Government committed to ending the privatisation of services at Peel Health Campus — as well as a $152 million redevelopment of the campus — in late 2020 The hospital was originally meant to return to government hands in August but that timeline was pushed back last November. The upgrades are also yet to commence in earnest. Liberal leader Libby Mettam said it was clear there had been “issues” for years at Peel Health Campus, but that the hospital had been left “in limbo” after the McGowan Government’s takeover announcement and subsequent delay. “As a result, the maintenance of the health campus has been put on the backburner during this transition and now it is putting patients and staff at risk. This is unacceptable,” she said.
