The Crown has returned to its royal glory and swept the Emmy Awards after taking out all of the major drama categories.

The fourth season of the series, which started streaming on Netflix last year, focused on the time period before 1979 and 1990.

It introduced characters Margaret Thatcher and Lady Diana Spencer in its retelling of Queen Elizabeth’s current reign.

After failing to pick up any awards last year, the drama was back in fine form, taking home all five major drama gongs — including Outstanding Drama Series.

After joining the cast in the third season as Prince Charles, Josh O’Connor was awarded the Lead Actor in a Drama Series, while Olivia Colman was recognised for her role as the monarch.

For his portrayal of Prince Philip, Tobias Menzies took home the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series award, while Gillian Anderson won Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for playing the role of Thatcher as prime minister.

Heading into the ceremony, feel-good comedy series Ted Lasso, which follows a sensitive American football-turned-soccer coach, earnt a record 20 nominations in its debut season — taking out seven gongs including Outstanding Comedy Series.

With the end of Schitt’s Creek (which swept all comedy categories at last year’s Emmy’s), the path was cleared for a new funny favourite to emerge.

And Jean Smart’s so-called “Jeanaissance” also reached its climax, with the 69-year-old winning Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Las Vegas comic Deborah Vance in Hacks.

Smart was also nominated for her role in Mare of Easttown but was beaten to the gong by co-star Julianne Nicholson.

Kate Winslet won Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for playing Det. Mare Sheehan in the series.

In her acceptance speech, Winslet said the show seemed like it was a “cultural moment that brought people together and gave them something to talk about other than a global pandemic”.

Evan Peters won the Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category for playing Mare’s partner, Det. Colin Zabel.

While Anya-Taylor Joy lost out to Winslet, The Queen’s Gambit won Outstanding Limited Series.

After being notably snubbed from last year’s Golden Globes, Michaela Coel took out the award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her semi-autobiographical show I May Destroy You, which charts a young woman’s experience of being sexually assaulted.

In her speech, she dedicated the win to “every single survivor” of sexual assault.

One of the surprise wins of the Emmy’s went to Ewan McGregor for Halston, in which he starred as famous US fashion designer Roy Halston.

The show was largely panned by critics on its release, with Rolling Stone condemning it “something you would find on the clearance rack”.

Despite getting audiences talking (and leaving many viewers hot under the collar), Bridgerton failed to pick up any major awards.

Other shows that failed to pick up major awards included Disney Plus series’ The Mandalorian and Wandavision, as well as the latest shocking season of The Handmaid’s Tale.

After going virtual in 2020, the Emmys were held in-person this year, with about 600 attendees at LA’s Microsoft Theatre.
