Coca-Cola Amatil recalls Appletiser amid contamination concerns

A popular apple juice sold at major supermarkets across Australia has been recalled over microbial contamination fears.

Coca-Cola Amatil recalled its 750ml bottles of Appletiser, a fizzy form of apple juice, on Wednesday.

The product is sold at Coles in Victoria, NSW and Tasmania as well as at Woolworths in Victoria.

The Food Standards Authority posted details about the recall which said it impacted bottles with best before dates of June 1 and June 2 2022.

“The recall is due to quality testing revealing higher than acceptable levels of patulin,” a note on the food standards website stated.

“Products containing elevated levels of mycotoxin (patulin) may cause illness if consumed.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

According to the World Health Organisation patulin is a mycotoxin produced by a variety of moulds.

It is often found in rotting apples and apple products.

This is not the first time a juice has been recalled over microbial contamination fears.

Late last year Nudie Foods issued the recall of its ‘Nudie nothing but 2 apples 200ml’ product for the same reason.
