Aguia secures mining licence for Brazilian phosphate play

Aguia Resources has moved another step closer to becoming a major fertiliser producer after securing a key mining concession for its Três Estradas phosphate project in southern Brazil.
The permit, granted by Brazil’s National Mining Agency last week, represents a major regulatory milestone for Aguia and clears the way for the company to obtain its final operational licence from the state environmental regulator, which is expected within the next four to six weeks.
With approval in hand, the company has pencilled in the commissioning of its processing plant for the end of April, bringing the long-awaited project within reach of second-quarter production.
Aguia says the Três Estradas mine site has been effectively ready to roll since late December, with environmental compliance wrapped up earlier this year and the last pieces of infrastructure now being installed.
Progress milestones at site include the installation of the weighbridge platform, which is now awaiting final curing before weighing modules are fitted. The on-site product analysis laboratory has already been set up and staffed.
Construction of the main electrical control room and mill operating facilities has also been completed, alongside safety upgrades to key processing machinery. Hiring of the necessary personnel is also underway.
On the marketing front, Aguia has taken its fertiliser ambitions straight to the paddock, launching the company’s Pampafos product at the massive EXPODIRETO agricultural trade fair in southern Brazil.
The event draws tens of thousands of farmers, agribusiness operators and distributors each year, giving the company a prime stage to showcase its locally produced phosphate fertiliser. By putting the product directly in front of the region’s growers, Aguia says it’s planting the first commercial seeds for what it expects will become a steady customer base once production begins.
Despite being a global agricultural powerhouse, Brazil remains heavily reliant on imported fertilisers, making domestic phosphate supply an increasingly strategic asset for the country’s farming sector.
Três Estradas is designed to tap into that demand by producing an organic phosphate fertiliser close to major agricultural markets.
The National Mining Agency of Brazil’s approval of the right to mine at Tres Estradas represents an important milestone, facilitating progress toward receiving the operational license from the environmental regulator FEPAM within the next four to six weeks.
Once operational, the project is expected to provide a local supply of phosphate fertiliser to farmers across southern Brazil, potentially reducing reliance on imported products and improving supply security for the region’s agricultural industry.
For Aguia, the development also adds a second pillar to its broader resource portfolio, which includes gold projects in Colombia.
While the company’s Colombian assets chase ounces in a strong gold market, the Três Estradas project positions Aguia in another sector attracting increasing global attention – the all-important fertilisers needed to sustain food production.
In a world increasingly focused on both resource security and food supply, Aguia’s exposure to gold and phosphate places it squarely between two commodities that underpin wealth and agriculture alike.
