For 90 years, Rover Scouts have been holding vigil from dusk to dawn at the State War Memorial to honour fallen soldiers.

Over 100 scouts take shifts on Anzac Day eve to march around the Kings Park memorial before joining in the honour guard for the solemn service.

Scouts WA chief commissioner Ayden Mackenzie said Anzac Day had always been an important day for the scouts.

“Rover Scouts commenced in 1918 at a time when young men were returning from war, so Anzac Day is significant for us,” he said.

“The vigil is a bit of a trust that has been passed through generations that understand the weight of remembrance and honouring fallen soldiers.

“Rovers from many years ago often still come overnight to pay their respects and talk to Rovers doing it now.”

Scouts of all ages commenced guarding the war memorial in 1931; however, from 1934 onwards, it was an honour given to the Rovers who were between the ages of 18 and 25.

Mr Mackenzie said it was an honour to reflect on 90 years of the Rovers keeping a 12-hour vigil ahead of Anzac Day.

“I’m pretty proud to reflect on the tradition that has been upheld for so long. It is a great tradition to hand down from Rover to Rover,” he said.

“This enduring commitment is a testament to their dedication and reverence for those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Scouts are expected to be participating in Anzac Day commemorations across the State on Thursday.
