Chery Tiggo 4 Pro: Baby SUV firming for Australian launch
Chery Motor Australia is on a product launch offensive, and next on its hit list could be a new entry-level SUV that slides in under $30,000.
Chery Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris told CarExpert the brand is looking to introduce the smaller Tiggo 4 potentially as soon as late 2024.
“Tiggo 4 will be [our next priority] after [Omoda] E5 and if all things go well we’ll see that car this side of Christmas,” Mr Harris said.
Mr Harris added the Chinese brand sees a “massive opportunity” in the sub-$30,000 end of the market, and said it’s “definitely something we’re looking at”.
The current Chery Tiggo 4 Pro is the second smallest model in the brand’s Tiggo SUV range, sitting above the Tiggo 2.
It’s a ‘subcompact’ SUV that measures 4318mm long and rides a 2610mm wheelbase – for reference, the Kia Seltos measures 4385mm long and has a 2630mm wheelbase.
Power in the Tiggo 4 Pro comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, similar to the 108kW/210Nm unit currently available in the Omoda 5.
An updated version of the Tiggo 4 for export was recently revealed in China, sporting refreshed front and rear ends as well as an updated interior with dual 10.25-inch displays like the Omoda 5, and an updated dashboard and centre console more in line with the brand’s latest models.
Official imagery of this updated model doesn’t appear to exist.
Mr Harris’s comments indicate a vehicle like the Tiggo 4 Pro could be sharply priced in the Australian market, likely serving as a rival to entry-level versions of the Mitsubishi ASX, MG ZST and GWM Haval Jolion.
Those vehicles start around the $26,000 drive-away mark, so a ‘base’ Chery Tiggo 4 Pro could become one of the cheapest new SUVs in the Australian market when it arrives.
Currently, Chery’s most affordable model is the Omoda 5, which is currently priced from $29,990 drive-away as part of an end of financial year deal.
